Polish developer Rebel Wolves has revealed that its dark fantasy vampire role-playing game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, was developed on a budget of $40 million. This figure positions the game as a double-A production rather than a triple-A blockbuster. Studio co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz shared the budget details in an interview with Bloomberg.
The $40 million budget stands in stark contrast to that of many contemporary triple-A games. For comparison, a game like 007 First Light reportedly cost $200 million, though that figure included significant licensing fees and actor wages. A more relevant comparison is CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3, a game also directed by Tomaszkiewicz. The Witcher 3's development cost approximately $80 million over a decade ago, with a substantial portion allocated to marketing. While Tomaszkiewicz has spoken of the two games sharing a similar scope, the budgetary difference is considerable, especially when accounting for inflation.
Despite its more modest budget, Rebel Wolves, which is 29 percent owned by Tencent, has demonstrated triple-A ambitions with The Blood of Dawnwalker. The game occasionally achieves a high level of polish, though some critics note that the visuals do not push the boundaries of current technology and the game world can feel repetitive. However, the game compensates for these aspects with its originality. It features a distinctive RPG structure that eschews a traditional main quest, instead offering players freedom to define their adventure within a limited timeframe. This approach aligns with former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden's calls for a return of risk-taking double-A titles.
In a review, The Blood of Dawnwalker was awarded four stars, praised for its familiar dark fantasy setting combined with bold and largely successful original ideas.
