Two Retailers to Withhold Grand Theft Auto VI Sales Over Digital-Only Release

Two North American video game retailers have announced they will not sell Grand Theft Auto VI upon its November release due to Rockstar Games' plan for a digital-only launch accompanied by an empty "code-in-box" product. Video Games Plus (VGP), a chain with over 30 years in operation, confirmed its policy of not carrying physical products for consoles that consist solely of a download code. VGP emphasized that this decision is not a critique of Grand Theft Auto VI itself but a commitment to supporting physical media and the value of disc-based ownership.

Similarly, Loot Box Gaming (LBG), a retailer focused on physical games, stated it will also refuse to stock Grand Theft Auto VI if it does not include a physical disc. LBG cited its founding principles of preserving gaming as a media form and ensuring that products honor the customers who purchase them. The company clarified that its stance is not intended to impact the anticipated success of Grand Theft Auto VI, expressing hope for its immense success while maintaining its business practices.

Rockstar Games revealed that Grand Theft Auto VI will cost $80 and that the physical release will be an empty box containing only a download code. This approach may serve to mitigate leaks and prevent the resale of used copies, thereby maintaining full revenue for Take-Two Interactive. Both VGP and LBG indicated they would be open to stocking Grand Theft Auto VI if a version containing an actual game disc becomes available in the future.
