Ubisoft is internally referring to its generative artificial intelligence initiative as 'Motherbrain,' a name that echoes the iconic antagonist from Nintendo's Metroid series, according to recently filed trademarks. The publisher, known for franchises like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, has registered several trademarks related to its advancements in AI technology.
One trademark specifically references "downloadable computer software using artificial intelligence (AI) for creating video games and interactive content." Another pertains to an AI service designed for "analyzing data and interacting with humans," as well as for the research and design of AI-powered software. These applications suggest a broad scope for the Motherbrain initiative within Ubisoft's development pipeline.
While Ubisoft has not yet publicly announced the 'Motherbrain' codename, the company has been vocal about its interest in generative AI and its potential applications in game development. In 2023, Ubisoft introduced Ghostwriter, an AI tool intended to assist in generating background dialogue for non-player characters. More recently, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that generative AI has been integrated company-wide, describing it as a revolution comparable to the transition from 2D to 3D graphics in gaming. The publisher also announced an increased investment in Teammates, a shooter being developed as Ubisoft's "first playable generative AI experience."
These developments in AI occur amidst significant restructuring within Ubisoft. Earlier this year, the company closed two studios, canceled six projects, and laid off employees. More recently, Ubisoft shut down two additional studios and restructured a third, resulting in approximately 380 job cuts.
