The recent cessation of updates for Destiny 2 and subsequent layoffs at Bungie have drawn somber reflection from developers across the industry, including Warframe's creative director, Rebecca Ford. Speaking at TennoCon, Ford described the situation as "horrible news," emphasizing that even significant developer investment and care cannot ultimately shield projects from the harsh realities of the business side of the games industry.
"It shows that even if you care so much, the business side of this industry always gets the last remark," Ford stated in an interview with GamesRadar+. She elaborated that the success of an intellectual property and the hard work of its team are not guaranteed protections against corporate decisions. This sentiment is particularly poignant given Destiny 2's continued player base and perceived improvement in game state by some observers.
The industry has seen a pattern of such events, including the studio closures by Microsoft in 2024 that affected developers like Tango Gameworks. Ford's comments underscore a broader concern within game development: the lack of control developers have over the conclusion of their own projects. "The idea that we aren't in charge of our own goodbye is something I wake up thinking about every single day," she shared, illustrating the existential threat she feels this dynamic poses at all levels of the industry.
