Xbox Game Pass Reportedly Set for Major Overhaul, Shifting to À La Carte Model

Microsoft is reportedly planning a substantial overhaul of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, according to Fortune. The proposed changes aim to shift the service from its current "all-you-can-eat" buffet model to a more flexible, à la carte arrangement.

Under the new structure, Game Pass would offer tiered options where players could select and pay for specific add-ons. Potential choices for subscribers might include access to cloud gaming, multiplayer features, or console-exclusive games. This strategy could help Microsoft manage costs and potentially attract more subscribers by allowing users to tailor their subscription to their specific interests and usage habits.

This move aligns with Microsoft's ongoing exploration of different service tiers, including its testing of an ad-supported Game Pass tier. Such an approach could lower the entry barrier for individuals who are not already dedicated gamers.

The overhaul may also signal a departure from offering all of Xbox's first-party games on day one of their release. Microsoft has already been moving in this direction with Premium Edition Upgrades, which offer early access for an additional cost to games that will later become available on Game Pass at no extra charge shortly after launch.

Internal projections reportedly indicated a goal of over 100 million subscribers for Game Pass. However, the service's growth has plateaued at around 35 million, impacting the broader Xbox business model for this console generation. The upcoming release of major Xbox titles, beginning with "Fable" in February 2027, is expected to precede the official rollout of these reported Game Pass changes.
