August 27 Marks Busiest Weekend for New Video Game Releases

August is set to conclude with a significant surge of new video game releases, marking one of the busiest weekends of the summer. This influx follows a month that has already seen substantial offerings across various genres, including the Soulslike "Beast of Reincarnation," the multiplayer title "Big Walk," the "Kingdom Hearts"-inspired "Duskfade," and the fighting game "Marvel: Tokon Fighting Souls."

As the industry anticipates a fall lineup featuring highly anticipated titles like "Grand Theft Auto 6" and "Marvel's Wolverine," August is delivering a final wave of major summer releases. These include new installments or significant packages for established franchises such as Elden Ring, Star Wars, and Metal Gear.

A New Direction for A Plague Tale

Launching on August 27, "Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy" offers a departure from the stealth-centric gameplay of its predecessors. This entry, set prior to the events of the previous two games, centers on the smuggler Sophia, a character introduced in "A Plague Tale: Requiem." "Resonance" introduces more combat opportunities and platforming sections, and notably, players control Sophia with three hit points, a significant change from the instant-death mechanic faced by protagonist Amicia in earlier titles. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and will also be included with Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Star Wars Tactics and Metal Gear Compilations

Also releasing on August 27 is "Star Wars Zero Company," a tactical game that merges the "Star Wars" universe with "XCOM"-style gameplay. Set during the Clone Wars, players command "Zero Company," a mercenary group tasked with galactic protection. The unit is led by Hawks, a disgraced Republic officer. The game incorporates deep tactical combat and permadeath mechanics characteristic of "XCOM," alongside RPG elements such as "the Den," a base where Hawks can engage with allies and manage relationships. "Star Wars Zero Company" will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Solid Snake holds a gun in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Further expanding the "Metal Gear" franchise's archival offerings, "Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2" is set for release on August 27. This compilation follows the 2023 "Master Collection Vol. 1," which included the first five mainline "Metal Gear" titles, VR missions, motion comics, and the NES versions of "Metal Gear" and "Snake's Revenge." Volume 2 adds the Game Boy Color title "Ghost Babel," the PlayStation 3 release "Guns of the Patriots," and the PSP entry "Peace Walker." It also includes the "Metal Gear Solid 4 Database," detailing the series lore up to "Guns of the Patriots." The collection will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Elden Ring and Captain Tsubasa Round Out the Week

One day later, on August 28, "Elden Ring Tarnished Edition" is scheduled to launch for the Nintendo Switch 2. This edition includes the base game "Elden Ring," the "Shadow of the Erdtree" expansion, and new in-game equipment and customization options.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

Concluding the week's releases on August 28 is "Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters," the latest video game adaptation of the popular manga and anime series. The game features over 110 playable characters, 22 national teams, and a custom player creation feature. It will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

With this concentrated release schedule, the weekend of August 27 appears to be a significant conclusion to the summer gaming calendar, potentially serving as a prelude to an even more active fall season.
