Charming 2006 Freeware Platformer Knytt Classic Arrives on Steam, Still Free

Knytt Classic, a modern rendition of the 2006 freeware platformer Knytt, has launched on Steam. Developed by Bit Kid, the team behind Wolfhound, this release offers a "pixel-perfect port" of the original game, maintaining its free availability and Nifflas’ original blessing.

The original Knytt was celebrated for its tranquil atmosphere and simple, responsive platforming, where players spent a few hours collecting spaceship parts. Its serene design led some to liken it to a walking simulator. Knytt Classic largely preserves these qualities, featuring the same chilled-out synth soundtracks and atmospheric world composed of 2D squares.

Bit Kid has introduced several enhancements for Knytt Classic, catering to players seeking more challenge or replayability. These additions include optional time tracking for speedrunners and three new difficulty modes. Notably, one of these modes, Knytt XH, was created by Arvi "Hempuli" Teikari, the developer of Baba Is You.

Further modernizing the experience, Knytt Classic includes controller support and compatibility with handheld PCs like the Steam Deck. While Valve has not yet officially certified the game for Steam Deck, initial impressions suggest smooth performance on the hardware. The release also adds Steam achievements and "hidden bonuses," a fitting addition for a game that encourages exploration, much like a Metroidvania.

Knytt Classic provides an accessible way to experience a fondly remembered indie game, now updated for contemporary hardware and player preferences, all without charge. Its re-release offers a cheerful distraction for players looking for a charming and atmospheric platforming adventure.
