Final Fantasy XIV Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 August 4

Final Fantasy XIV will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, Square Enix announced today. The confirmation came from game director Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin.

Preorders for the game will commence later today, with Square Enix directing fans to monitor their social media channels for further updates. To ensure server stability during the initial period, the first month of play on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be free of subscription charges. Following this introductory period, players will be required to purchase a subscription as usual.

Yoshi-P acknowledged the long wait for the Switch 2 version, stating, "We knew that you've been waiting for this for a long time, so we're very happy to bring this to you." He also revisited details regarding the Switch 2 version's subscription model. As previously revealed at the Anaheim Fan Fest, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition will necessitate a separate subscription. This decision, according to Yoshi-P, followed extensive discussions with Nintendo. However, players will not need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play. Additionally, individuals with active Final Fantasy XIV subscriptions on other platforms will receive a 50% discount on their Switch 2 subscription.

The Fan Festival presentation also provided further information on the upcoming Evercold expansion, the introduction of the Bastion tank role, and a new collaboration with Final Fantasy 7, among other updates.

This port brings the critically acclaimed MMORPG, previously reviewed by IGN with an 8.6/10, to a new platform, extending its reach to Nintendo Switch 2 owners.
