Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Exits Early Access After a Decade

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (H3VR), a virtual reality first-person shooter sandbox, has officially concluded its extensive early access period on Steam. Initially launching into early access in April 2016, the game joins titles like Superhot VR and Job Simulator as one of the foundational VR experiences that captured player attention in the genre's early days.

A Decade of Development

After more than ten years, H3VR has reached its 1.0 launch with its 120th update. Developer Anton Hand of the four-person studio Rust Limited described the launch as a "moment he wondered if [it] would ever come." The latest update brings substantial changes, including a significant overhaul to the game's flagship Take & Hold mode. New additions include a "Lucky Looter" character and a "BBQ Range" scene. Furthermore, a new gameplanner system has been introduced, allowing players to create custom devices and interactive scenarios by wiring objects together.

The Future of H3VR

Alongside the 1.0 launch, Rust Limited also announced a sequel, Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, & Hand Grenades 2, in May 2026. This follow-up aims to evolve beyond a pure sandbox, offering a more structured experience. H3VR2 is described as an immersive sim and extraction shooter where players "fight [their] way through an endless proc-gen megastructure." Development of the sequel is a collaboration with Zulubo Productions, expanding the team to nearly 20 developers. Notably, H3VR2 is being designed with the Meta Quest 3 in mind, a departure from the original game which required PC connectivity for earlier VR headsets.

Player Reception

Across its decade in early access, H3VR has garnered nearly 20,000 reviews on Steam, maintaining an "overwhelmingly positive" consensus. Players have frequently praised the game's tactile gunplay and satisfying interactivity with firearms and other virtual objects. On Reddit, users have described H3VR as offering "the best-feeling gunplay" in VR and noted that it's a title that makes them eager to put on their VR headset.

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is available now on Steam for $19.99. The release date for the sequel remains unannounced.
