Aspyr has announced that two critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings titles, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War, are set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 30. The games will be offered together in the Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle, which includes the Game of the Year Edition of Shadow of Mordor and the Definitive Edition of Shadow of War, incorporating their major story expansions and downloadable content.
Both titles will also be available for individual purchase. The bundle is priced at $69.99, but a limited-time pre-order discount brings the price down to $34.99.
These open-world action games are set within Tolkien's Middle-earth but present an original narrative focusing on Mordor and its struggle against Sauron. Players assume the role of Talion, a Gondor ranger resurrected by the wraith Celebrimbor, who possesses the powers of the Elven smith who forged the Rings of Power. Together, they embark on a quest across Mordor to confront Sauron's forces.
The sequel, Shadow of War, continues this story, with Talion and Celebrimbor aiming to create a new Ring of Power and raise an army to challenge the Dark Lord. This leads to large-scale fortress assaults and a gameplay focus on recruiting orcs, manipulating rivalries, and building a personal army.
Neither game is a direct adaptation of Tolkien's novels; instead, they leverage established characters and lore to craft a unique story that complements the existing canon. The defining feature of both games is the Nemesis System, which dynamically generates unique enemy orcs. These enemies can survive encounters, remember past battles, gain power, and even become recurring rivals. Players can also dominate and recruit these orcs into their own ranks, creating a personalized experience and a unique version of Mordor for each player.
Combined with the open-world exploration, engaging combat, stealth mechanics, and strategic army building, the Shadow of Mordor games offer a distinct approach to experiencing the world of Middle-earth.
