The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War, are set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 30th. Both titles, developed by Monolith Productions, will include all previously released downloadable content. Aspyr is credited with handling the porting of these acclaimed action-adventure games.
A new bundle containing both Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War is available for pre-order at a 50 percent discount. The bundle's standard price is £62.99 / $70.
Shadow of Mordor, released in 2015, was lauded for its procedural Nemesis system. This mechanic allowed enemy orcs to develop unique personalities, gain strengths and weaknesses based on player encounters, and rise through the ranks of Sauron's army, creating emergent narratives. In a 2017 review, Shadow of War was noted for its gameplay improvements, though its story was considered a weak point. The Nemesis system has remained a distinctive feature of the series, with few comparable mechanics appearing in other games, partly due to a patent held by Warner Bros. until 2036.
Aspyr previously remastered The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, hinting at potential future re-releases of classic Lord of the Rings games. Monolith Productions, the studio behind the Nemesis system games, was closed in 2025, and its in-development Wonder Woman game was canceled.
