The popular puzzle game Lumines Remastered has received a surprise launch on iOS and Android devices, marking the series' return to mobile for the first time in approximately eight years. The game, a remaster of the 2004 PSP launch title Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, is available for download on Apple and Android devices today. It operates on a free-to-try model, with an option to unlock the complete version for $7.99.
Developed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Lumines challenges players to create 2x2 squares by matching colors in a horizontal well, synchronizing actions with the game's music. Since its debut, the series has seen numerous installments, including a few mobile spin-offs. Lumines Remastered follows Lumines: Puzzle & Music, which was released in 2016, and represents the original PSP game's debut on iOS and Android.
The mobile adaptation was primarily handled by Sound Games, the developer behind Spilled!, in collaboration with Enhance. This release is a direct port of the Lumines Remastered edition and includes its established modes: Time Attack, Challenge, Puzzle, and Mission, along with a two-player battle mode. The primary adjustment for the mobile version is the incorporation of touch controls.
Initial impressions of the mobile port suggest a faithful rendition of the remaster. All expected modes are present, the acclaimed soundtrack remains intact, and the core puzzle gameplay is well-suited for portable play. The main adjustment for players will be adapting to the new control schemes.
The game offers three distinct control configurations to accommodate player preference. The Classic controls feature arrow buttons on the left of the screen, two rotation buttons on the right, and drop buttons accessible from both sides. A Simple scheme mirrors this but reduces the rotation buttons to one and keeps drops on the right. While both took some adjustment due to the button size, the Classic layout felt more intuitive for some players.
For many, the Gestures control scheme proved to be the most effective. This method bypasses on-screen buttons, allowing players to move pieces by dragging their finger, rotate them with a tap, and swipe down to drop. This approach enabled a fluid and responsive gameplay experience, comparable to playing with a traditional controller. While reaction times might still be faster with a gamepad, the touch controls offer a surprisingly capable alternative.
Lumines Remastered is positioned as an excellent entry point for newcomers to the series. The $8 price point is considered a significant value, especially when compared to the $15 cost on PC and consoles. Despite the existence of a newer installment, Lumines Arise, Lumines Remastered continues to be lauded for its refined puzzle mechanics and enduring soundtrack. The mobile release offers a more engaging use of a smartphone screen than typical social media browsing.
In addition to the game's availability on iOS and Android, the original soundtrack for Lumines Remastered is also accessible on major streaming platforms.
