Minecraft will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, developer Mojang has announced. This new version will feature a graphical upgrade dubbed "Vibrant Visuals," which aims to enhance lighting and shadows on Nintendo's latest hardware. However, Mojang has clarified that not all in-game content will support these visual enhancements, with split-screen play and certain marketplace content being exceptions.
The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, exclusive to Nintendo platforms, is set to receive an update to take advantage of the "Vibrant Visuals" improvements. For players who own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang has confirmed that a digital upgrade path will be available. Details regarding whether this upgrade will be free of charge or incur a cost have yet to be released, with the developer promising further information at a later date. Crucially, Mojang has previously assured players that save data from the original Switch version of Minecraft will transfer to the Switch 2, preserving worlds and progress.
In other recent Minecraft-related news, Mojang has introduced the ability to sit within the game. A sequel to Minecraft Dungeons is scheduled for release in September, and a follow-up to the Minecraft Movie is slated for 2027. Parent company Microsoft appears to be increasing its focus on Minecraft following recent organizational restructuring and layoffs. Mojang, alongside Candy Crush developer King, now reports directly to new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, a development that has raised some concerns among fans regarding potential Microsoft interference with the game.
