Minecraft is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 this fall, bringing a native version of the popular sandbox game with significant graphical enhancements. Mojang announced Wednesday that the new version will include the Vibrant Visuals graphics update by default, which introduces more advanced lighting, volumetric fog, improved water reflections, directional lighting, and detailed shadows.
The native version is specifically optimized for the Switch 2 hardware. Players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch will have an upgrade path to the Switch 2 Edition, suggesting a discounted price or eligibility through a Minecraft subscription, meaning they will not need to repurchase the game entirely.
This release caps off a busy year for Minecraft, which has seen continuous evolution through updates and new projects. The Vibrant Visuals update initially debuted as part of the Chase the Skies update, representing one of the most substantial technical upgrades for the game since its initial launch.
Mojang has also continued to expand Minecraft's gameplay features with new content updates. Recent additions include decorative furniture options, such as cushions and beds, allowing players to further customize their in-game creations and build more intricate interiors without relying on mods. This focus on smaller, more frequent content drops aligns with the studio's recent strategy, moving away from large, annual releases.
The Minecraft franchise is also extending beyond its flagship title. Mojang and Double Eleven revealed Minecraft Dungeons 2 during Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase in June. The sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG is scheduled for release next year and promises new biomes, enemies, and cooperative adventures, building upon the original's loot-driven mechanics. Additionally, a new Minecraft movie, titled "A Minecraft Movie Squared," is planned for a 2027 release.
The native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft is scheduled to launch on October 27.
