Onimusha: Way of the Sword Arrives September 4, Shifting Release Calendar

Capcom has announced a revised launch date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, moving the PS2-era reboot's release from September 25 to September 4. This marks the second time this year that Capcom has advanced a release schedule, following a similar early launch for Pragmata.

The adjusted September release places Onimusha: Way of the Sword in a more crowded market. Originally, the game was slated to launch alongside Silent Hill: Townfall and Control Resonant, both scheduled for September 24. The new September 4 date positions it as the primary competitor to The Blood of Dawnwalker, the debut action RPG from Polish studio Rebel Wolves, which is led by former CD Projekt developers. While this move avoids direct competition with two established franchises, it introduces a new dynamic with Rebel Wolves' ambitious title.

Despite initial assumptions of a niche appeal, Onimusha: Way of the Sword has garnered significant positive attention. Colleagues at PC Gamer praised the game, with one editor highlighting it as the most impressive title seen at the 2025 Summer Game Fest, leading to a subsequent hands-on experience that was also well-received by the public.

However, The Blood of Dawnwalker offers a distinct draw for a specific segment of RPG enthusiasts with its ability to kill any NPC. This unique feature may prove to be a strong incentive for players to adhere to its original release window, regardless of Onimusha's earlier arrival. The broader release landscape for September and October remains busy, with November being notably dominated by the impending launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, creating a significant gravitational pull for all other titles in the latter half of the year.
