Capcom has announced a new release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, moving the upcoming sequel in the action series up to September 4. This change positions the game's launch three weeks earlier than its previously scheduled September 25 release.
The revised date applies to all versions of the game, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. In conjunction with the new date, Capcom has also extended the availability of the pre-order bonus. It will now be offered as an "early adopter bonus" until September 24, with Steam and Epic Games Store users having until September 25 to claim it, providing a larger window for players to obtain these digital items.
The game's demo, currently accessible on all platforms except Switch 2, will also be updated to reflect the shifted schedule. Players who complete the demo on the same platform as the full game are entitled to a bonus within the full release, necessitating these adjustments.
This revised release date comes shortly after Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki commented on the decision to launch during a busy September. In an interview conducted in June at Summer Game Fest, Kadowaki noted the game's commitment to its release window, stating, "We've already said we're releasing it. We can't back out now!" This was during a period when multiple anticipated games revealed their release dates, leading to a crowded late-year schedule for many titles. Developers are reportedly aiming to avoid direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6, which is slated for a late November release.
Capcom itself was an early announcer of a September launch for Way of the Sword, having revealed it during Sony's State of Play in June, prior to the full extent of the month's crowded release calendar becoming apparent. The game's official X account has also confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will include a physical disc release, a detail that has become a notable point of clarification for consumers following recent news regarding other major releases.
