Palworld 1.0 Launches After Three Years of Early Access and Legal Battles

Pocketpair's ambitious open-world monster-taming game with survival elements, Palworld, has officially launched its 1.0 version after more than three years in early access. The game, which gained significant attention for its blend of creature collection and combat, has overcome development challenges and legal scrutiny to reach this milestone.

A Definitive Launch

The 1.0 update introduces a substantial amount of new content, including 47 new Pals, 13 new weapons, and two new regions to explore. Players can also expect new skills, mechanics, and story quests. The scope of the update was so considerable that its details reportedly spanned 40 pages, exceeding Steam's maximum character limit.

Post-Early Access Success

Since its early access launch in January 2024, Palworld quickly became a viral sensation, peaking at 2.1 million concurrent players on Steam. The full launch has also seen strong performance, with nearly 500,000 concurrent players in its first 48 hours on Steam alone. Pocketpair announced that the game had reached 40 million players shortly before the 1.0 release. To express gratitude for the game's overwhelming success, the studio has committed to keeping Palworld priced at $29.99 upon its official launch.

Navigating Legal Challenges

The full release follows a period of legal contention with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. These entities had pursued an injunction and sought damages, alleging infringement of multiple patent rights. Pocketpair made certain gameplay adjustments to address these claims, with Nintendo's lawsuit reportedly focusing on older versions of the game. Despite these hurdles, the studio proceeded with the full release.

Expanding the Palworld Universe

Looking beyond the game's core release, Pocketpair also plans to launch a Palworld trading card game by the end of the month. Palworld is available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
