Pocketpair's creature-catching survival game Palworld has officially launched its 1.0 version today, exiting early access after a period of significant commercial success and legal contention with Nintendo. The game, which first garnered attention in early 2024, has reportedly sold 40 million copies.
Palworld gained notoriety for its distinctive premise: taking creatures that bear a strong resemblance to Pokémon and putting them to work in industrial settings, such as assault rifle factories. This concept tapped into player desires for a survival and base-building experience within a creature-collecting framework, a genre not typically explored by existing Pokémon titles.
Initial impressions of the early access version, as described by Katharine Castle for Rock Paper Shotgun, characterized it as "base building junk food" and noted that Palworld "isn't really that interested in being an actual Pokémon-like." Since its early access debut, the game has seen additions such as new islands, aerial Pals, and collaborations, expanding its content offering.
Development of Palworld has occurred in parallel with legal action initiated by Nintendo. Developers Pocketpair faced lawsuits from Nintendo, with the Japanese publisher's legal team reportedly focusing on patent infringements related to specific game mechanics, including the concept of "flying mounts." While Pocketpair made adjustments, such as removing the ability to use Pals for gliding, these changes did not significantly impact the game's sales trajectory.
This commercial success has enabled Pocketpair to expand into game publishing, with plans for a Palworld farming simulation spin-off announced shortly after Nintendo revealed its own husbandry game, Pokopia. The developer's ongoing revenue from Palworld is substantial, as evidenced by the 40 million unit sales.
Nintendo's legal efforts appear aimed at preventing brand dilution from imitators and deterring other developers from creating similar titles. The 1.0 release is scheduled for distribution on July 10th, with 27 pages of patch notes anticipated for the update. Players who have used mods are advised to uninstall them before downloading the latest version.
