Seven wild city builders redefine 2026

City builders are in the midst of a 2026 renaissance, with a slate of new titles that push urban planning into exotic settings. Players can expect worlds ranging from a Rome where real gods loom and unleash disasters to a metropolis on the back of a cosmic space whale, and even a world built around a sprawling Mokiton creature economy. The seven titles highlighted below showcase the breadth of experimentation, proving the genre is thriving beyond the usual city-center tropes.

Nova Roma, due in January 2026, tasks players with rebuilding a fallen Rome while navigating the gods' anger; lightning bolts and other disasters can strike when the city displeases them. A demo is already available for those who want to sample the experience early.

DarkSwitch, releasing in March 2026, is a vertical city builder set in a dark fantasy realm. The player constructs an elvish metropolis that spirals around a gigantic sacred tree, while creeping fog pushes citizens toward madness and creates unique management challenges.

Steel Artery: Train City Builder invites players to build a city on a moving steam-powered train as it threads through a steampunk world. A Steam Playtest is open now, with thousands of autonomous citizens—many of them orcs and elves—whose needs must be met to keep the engine running and the economy thriving.

Beyond These Stars drops in 2026 and casts players aboard a giant space whale navigating the cosmos. Citizens—referred to as Peeps—live on the beast’s carapace as cities expand. Players develop technology to talk with their rider and must manage the ecosystem to expand without triggering disaster.

County of Fortune invites players to govern an entire medieval county, building multiple interconnected settlements and guiding evolving social, cultural, and political identities.

Tamer Town introduces a Mokiton-based world; in a city built around the collectible creature economy, players run arenas where critters and their trainers can do friendly battles, with over 130 Mokiton to recruit.

Metropolis 1998 revisits a retro isometric vibe while delivering modern simulation. Players can design and decorate every building themselves, supported by a frequently updated demo.

The lineup demonstrates the breadth of the 2026 city-builder landscape, from mythic empires and vertical fantasies to roaming trains, cosmic habitats, and creature economies. PC Gamer will continue to track demos, releases, and updates as they arrive.
