A surprise re-release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has arrived today, developed by Embracer-owned Aspyr Media. The game is now available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Originally launched in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, this new edition is priced at $20, with a promotional price of $18 available until August 25.
The Legacy edition of War in the North features both online and local split-screen co-op modes, alongside what is described as "optimized" solo play. Specific details regarding the extent of these updates and upgrades have not yet been disclosed.
War in the North was developed by Snowblind Studios, which ceased operations in 2012. Set within Middle-earth, the game's narrative does not directly adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's books or Peter Jackson's film adaptations. Instead, it incorporates characters and story elements from both, distinguishing itself from earlier games that had licensing restrictions focused solely on the film elements.
The game allows players to control one of three distinct characters: the ranger Eradan, the elf Andriel, or the dwarf Farin, with the ability to switch between them during combat. Each character possesses unique skills and abilities that can be enhanced through upgrades to weapons and powers as players progress. The title also includes iconic elements from the franchise, such as the ability to call upon the eagle Beleram for assistance in battle. Players will encounter familiar characters like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond, and traverse famous locations including Rivendell, Lothlórien, The Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood.
This re-release comes as Embracer Group, the current rights holder for The Lord of the Rings in gaming, has expressed intentions to revitalize the franchise. Several new Lord of the Rings titles are reportedly in development, including an RPG from Kingdom Come developer Warhorse and another project from Crystal Dynamics, both of which are Embracer subsidiaries.
