Pixar's Toy Story 5 is set to launch on digital platforms on August 18, 2026, allowing audiences to rent or purchase the film from participating services such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. This digital release comes nearly two months after the movie's initial theatrical debut, a longer period of exclusive cinematic viewing compared to more recent major franchise releases.
The extended theatrical window aligns with the film's significant box office success. Toy Story 5 has grossed over $1 billion worldwide against an estimated production budget of $250 million, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2026 to date. This performance occurs even as Disney reportedly implements staff layoffs at Pixar, partly attributed to the underperformance of other recent projects.
Despite initial challenges in its first half, the film offers an adventurous and resonant conclusion. New characters inject fresh energy, and the strategic sidelining of certain legacy characters contributes to a satisfying wrap-up for the installment. Physical media releases are also confirmed, with DVD, Blu-ray, and a limited edition 4K UHD steelbook slated for September 22. These editions will include collections of the original Toy Story and Toy Story 5 in 4K, as well as a compilation of all five movies in the franchise. Preorder details are expected to surface closer to the digital launch.
Looking ahead, Pixar's next project, an original animated film titled Gatto, is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 5, 2027. While there is no current indication of further Toy Story sequels, a producer has explicitly ruled out any live-action adaptations of the franchise.
Toy Story 5 is also expected to arrive on Disney+ approximately three months after its theatrical debut, following the pattern of recent Pixar releases like Hoppers, Elio, and Inside Out 2. This would place its streaming debut on Disney+ in mid-September.
