Developer Bulkhead has announced that its first-person shooter, Wardogs, will launch into Steam Early Access on September 10th, priced at $39.99. This release date follows a recent closed alpha test that garnered positive player feedback, with content creators like TheTacticalBrit expressing optimism about its potential success and "wow moments" within a "pick-up-and-play" format.
Other creators have noted specific gameplay elements, with GhostGamingGG claiming that Wardogs' helicopter mechanics surpass those in Battlefield 6. Melandryu described their alpha experience as one of the best in years. Players who pre-order Wardogs will gain access to an upcoming closed beta weekend scheduled for August 21-23, offering an opportunity to test the game's large-scale warfare and systems before the early access launch.
Wardogs aims to occupy a middle ground between more casual shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, and realistic titles such as Squad and Escape From Tarkov. The game introduces unique mechanics, including the ability to become an arms dealer by selling weapons to teammates. This "business" element, where in-game cash plays a significant role, is designed to appeal to what developer Joe Brammer calls "dad gamers," as all actions, not just combat, contribute to the team's effort. The game also features permanent progression systems, similar to RuneScape, where experience points are earned through various in-game actions.
The September release slate will see Wardogs contending with other game launches as it emerges from Grand Theft Auto 6's considerable shadow.
