Zelda Switch 2 Launch Marred by Retailer Stock Issues

The special edition Nintendo Switch 2 console for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which released on October 29, has been impacted by significant stock and fulfillment issues at major retailers. Even customers who successfully pre-ordered the golden console have encountered last-minute problems with their orders.

Walmart notified some customers that their pre-orders would not be fulfilled, with reports emerging a day before release. Adding to the frustration, these same consoles were often available from third-party sellers on Walmart's platform for substantially higher prices. A Walmart representative reportedly stated that the retailer had oversold its stock of the Zelda Switch 2, making it difficult to rectify the situation quickly.

Further complicating matters, some Walmart stores received internal notices regarding supply chain delays that prevented them from selling the hardware at all, even to customers with pre-orders. While Walmart assured customers that existing orders would eventually be filled once shipments arrived, the situation caused confusion, particularly when some stores that had initially announced delays later received stock but were still unable to process sales.

Target has also faced similar challenges. Online customers reported that their Switch 2 consoles had not yet shipped or that delivery had been postponed to mid-November, well after the Ocarina of Time remake's release. Some Target shoppers experienced outright cancellations of their Zelda Switch 2 orders.

Best Buy, with a later release date of November 5, appears to be less affected by immediate stock shortages. However, some Best Buy customers noted that their game pre-orders would not ship until a day after the official release, likely resulting in delayed delivery. Despite these hardware-related disruptions, pre-orders for the Ocarina of Time remake game itself remain more widely available across major retailers.
