007 First Light PC Performance Improves, but DLSS Frame Generation Needs Tweaks

Initial PC performance testing for 007 First Light suggests a more stable experience than was shown in its stuttering reveal footage. While not consistently smooth, the release build appears to be significantly more resistant to framerate dips during demanding action sequences.

Upscaling and Frame Generation in Focus

DLSS upscaling functions well, providing notable framerate increases on its Quality mode across various hardware, from high-end RTX 5080s at 4K to more modest RTX 5050s at 1080p. At 1080p, DLSS offers sharper visuals than AMD's FSR upscaler. However, FSR remains a viable option for non-RTX graphics cards. Even a GTX 1070, close to the minimum specification, struggled to maintain 30fps at native 1080p on low settings, but Quality FSR improved performance to the 45-50fps range.

More powerful systems also experience fluctuations. An RTX 5050, for instance, averaged around 60fps with High settings and DLSS Quality mode during densely populated infiltration segments. This dropped to approximately 45fps during a car chase and subsequent airfield shootout, but the performance remained consistent, avoiding the unpredictable stuttering seen previously.

Navigating DLSS Frame Generation

Users with RTX graphics cards can leverage frame generation for enhanced visual smoothness. The classic 2x DLSS multiplier option appears to be the most stable, increasing framerates from around 60fps to 72-80fps on an RTX 5050 with minimal impact on input lag. However, higher multipliers (4x and above), including DLSS 4.5's Dynamic MFG modes, are advised against. While these modes significantly boost framerates, reaching over 120fps at 4x and exceeding 140fps in Dynamic mode, they introduce noticeable input lag and are prone to visual artifacts, such as character model distortions.

To mitigate issues with Dynamic MFG, it is recommended to access the Nvidia App's DLSS Overrides section and limit the mode's multiplier to 3x. Setting a target FPS within this section is also suggested to prevent overreach by the frame generation technology.

Overall Technical Impression

Beyond the frame generation adjustments, 007 First Light appears technically sound. The game benefits from, but does not necessitate, high-end PC hardware. Its optional ray tracing implementation is visually appealing. The game's stability has improved considerably since its initial reveal, offering a more consistent experience for players despite occasional performance dips in intense scenarios. For those seeking the best visual experience, careful configuration of DLSS settings, particularly frame generation multipliers, is key.
