Sony has announced that a form of AI upscaling technology, previously exclusive to the PS5 Pro, is now coming to the base PlayStation 5 console. This new feature, named Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), will debut with Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine and Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Yotei.
QSSR is an evolution of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology that debuted on the PS5 Pro. Sony describes QSSR as a "new performance tier of AI upscaling" developed through a collaboration with AMD, internally known as Project Amethyst. The system utilizes a "streamlined neural network architecture" and a "hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5," aiming to deliver enhanced image detail and stability.
Insomniac Games' head of technology, Mike Fitzgerald, stated that QSSR will "add more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey" in Marvel's Wolverine. Early demonstrations suggest visible improvements in the crispness of distant objects and environmental textures.
Similarly, Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, noted the impact on Ghost of Yotei. "We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal," Patry commented, highlighting improvements to close-up details like foliage in the game.
The QSSR feature is available for both Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei on PS5 starting today. Sony is also making this technology available to all developers on the platform, suggesting it may appear in future titles across a wider range of games.
