Capcom Details Painstaking Process of Porting Monster Hunter Wilds to Switch 2

Capcom has detailed the significant technical challenges involved in bringing Monster Hunter Wilds to the Nintendo Switch 2, describing the process as "painstaking and at times seemingly endless." The development team's primary goal is not to simply scale down the game, but to rebuild it from the ground up to preserve as much of the original experience as possible.

Producer Genki Sunano stated that the concept for the Switch 2 version was to deliver a natural Monster Hunter Wilds experience. "We didn’t want it to feel like a simple port, where the graphics or performance had merely been scaled down," Sunano explained. "Instead, our goal was to bring the Wilds experience to Nintendo Switch 2 without compromising the experience of Monster Hunter Wilds."

The performance target for the Switch 2 version is a stable 30 frames per second in handheld mode, even during four-player multiplayer hunts. Sunano noted that the game's complexity required careful evaluation of every element. "It was this painstaking, and at times seemingly endless, process of making decisions and optimizations one by one that proved to be one of our biggest challenges in delivering a comfortable handheld experience while preserving what makes Wilds feel like Wilds."

To achieve this, certain assets and shaders have been rebuilt from scratch. The team is focusing on creating more efficient implementations while maintaining the game's original aesthetic. Modifications to visual effects, for instance, were carefully managed to ensure they aligned with existing hitboxes and collision detection.

"Through this process, we focused our resources on areas that directly affect the gameplay experience," Sunano said. "At the same time, we took another, much closer look at areas we had previously considered sufficiently optimized for home-console hardware. To make the game run on handheld hardware, we reassessed every aspect of these areas and replaced certain visual techniques and internal processing with more efficient solutions." Capcom plans to apply the knowledge gained from this project to performance improvements for existing platforms leading up to the release of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance.

While the benefits derived from this development process may remain specific to the Switch 2 port, the learning experience could influence Capcom's broader development strategies. Monster Hunter Wilds is scheduled to launch on Nintendo's console on December 4.
