Diablo 4 Switch 2 Port Promises Mouse Controls and Impressive Performance

Blizzard is bringing Diablo 4 to the Nintendo Switch 2 with the "Age of Hatred Collection," a package that includes the base game and its upcoming "Vessel of Hatred" and "Lord of Hatred" expansions. Polygon experienced the port firsthand at BlizzCon 2026, confirming with Blizzard that the game will feature mouse control support at launch, a feature leveraging the unique capabilities of the Switch 2's Joy-Con 2 controllers.

The Joy-Con 2 controllers can emulate mouse functionality when placed on a flat surface, a feature seen in other Switch 2 titles like Fortnite and Sid Meier's Civilization 7. For Diablo 4, this offers a distinct control option not present in its PlayStation or Xbox counterparts, capitalizing on the franchise's PC origins. While the BlizzCon demo did not allow for testing these mouse controls in handheld mode due to locked controllers, the overall impression of the port was positive.

The hands-on demo featured a quest from the "Season of Hell's Legacy," titled "A Journey Through The Past." This quest, set to coincide with the port's release and Diablo's 30th anniversary, involved navigating a dungeon within the Furnace of Hate and battling past villains such as Mephisto and Belial. The quest's design appeared to be a direct port from the PC version, ensuring no content compromises for Switch 2 players. However, unlike Diablo 3's Switch port, this iteration does not seem to include exclusive Nintendo-themed bonuses.

While the Switch 2 is less powerful than the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, the Diablo 4 port holds its own visually. In docked mode, the game presents a graphical experience comparable to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, a noticeable step down from the high-end PC build demonstrated alongside it. Despite this, the port maintained stable performance without visible lag, even during intense boss encounters, and exhibited surprisingly fast loading times. Input responsiveness remained reliable throughout the demo.

The true strength of the Diablo 4 Switch 2 port appears to be its handheld mode. The performance and resolution remained stable even during chaotic on-screen action, offering an uncompromised experience on the go. The primary drawback for handheld play is the reduced size of in-game text, which might make reading dialogue, item descriptions, and status effects challenging for some players. For those less concerned with granular text details and more focused on the action, the port is described as being even more tailored for handheld play than the Steam Deck Verified PC version.

Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection is slated to launch on September 14, coinciding with the start of "Season of Hell's Legacy." The port aims to offer a compelling way to experience Diablo 4, particularly for players who prioritize on-the-go gaming, without sacrificing core gameplay elements.
