Dragon Age: Origins, the acclaimed 2009 fantasy RPG from BioWare, has earned an 'Unsupported' classification on Steam Deck. However, this designation belies the game's surprisingly smooth performance and enjoyable experience on Valve's handheld PC, especially after some straightforward configuration.
Initially, launching the game presented an outdated 4:3 launcher that offered no option to save graphics settings. This led to an initial experience of an 800x600 display with low graphical detail. Fortunately, these initial hurdles are easily overcome from within the game itself. Players can adjust the resolution to the Steam Deck's native 1280x800 and set graphics and texture detail to 'very high'. At these settings, the game consistently achieves a locked 60 frames per second, with the option to push towards 90 fps, albeit with less consistent performance.
The primary challenge for Steam Deck players is the lack of native gamepad support, a feature present in the console versions. This is mitigated by a robust community-created control layout. Khar's Dragon Age: Origins layout effectively blends third-person action game immersion with the essential mouse controls needed for the RPG. Movement is assigned to the left analog stick, while the right trackpad emulates mouse pointer control. This allows for interaction with objects, initiating conversations, and selecting hotbar abilities, though the right analog stick mapping for the mouse is reportedly less effective.
A minor quirk reported with the community layout is the accidental mapping of quick load to the L4 button. To avoid this, some users have reassigned it to open the map, while quick save has been mapped to an upper D-pad button. Despite these minor adjustments, the return to Dragon Age: Origins on the Steam Deck is described as a highly positive experience, requiring less effort than some games officially designated as 'Playable'.
