Elden Ring on Switch 2 Delivers Serviceable Experience Despite Compromises

Elden Ring is now playable on the Nintendo Switch 2, offering a way to experience FromSoftware's acclaimed open-world title on Nintendo's upcoming hardware. While the port "gets the job done admirably," it represents an inferior version of the game when compared to its counterparts on more powerful systems.

Initial impressions from docked mode suggest a positive experience in controlled environments. The tutorial caves remain consistent, though the game does not achieve a target of 60 frames per second. The primary struggles emerge when transitioning to the open world. Rapid camera movements and actions such as summoning the player's spectral steed, Torrent, reveal performance limitations. However, the game's core combat encounters, even against formidable foes, are reportedly manageable as player focus shifts to enemies rather than distant environmental details.

This iteration of Elden Ring on Switch 2 draws comparisons to previous console generations, such as Resident Evil 2 on the Nintendo 64. That earlier port featured compromises in visual presentation, like compressed cutscenes and backgrounds, to fit on cartridges. Despite these reductions, it was still considered a perfectly reasonable way to experience the game for those without access to the original PlayStation version.

For new players who may only have a Switch 2 and are eager to dive into what many consider a landmark title, this version is expected to provide the full Elden Ring experience, albeit with some caveats. It is noted to be a significantly better port than, for example, The Outer Worlds on the original Switch, which suffered from severe performance and visual issues. The Switch 2 version avoids being a blurry, low-framerate rendition often seen in earlier Switch ports of demanding games.

However, players who have experienced Elden Ring on platforms like Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, or a capable PC will likely notice the differences immediately. The compromises in frame rate and visual fidelity become apparent when there is a direct point of comparison to the higher-performing, more detailed versions available elsewhere.
