Elden Ring on the Nintendo Switch 2 provides a playable, albeit compromised, experience of FromSoftware's acclaimed title. While the game "gets the job done" for newcomers or those without access to other platforms, players who have experienced it on more powerful hardware will readily notice the graphical and performance concessions.
During a two-hour session in docked mode, the tutorial areas within caves ran consistently, though not at the desired 60 frames per second. The performance struggles become more apparent when entering the open world. Quick camera movements and mounting the player's steed, Torrent, proved to be the most taxing actions for the hardware. However, these issues do not render the game unplayable, especially during combat encounters where the focus shifts to enemies rather than distant environmental details.
The port draws comparisons to previous console-to-handheld adaptations, such as Resident Evil 2 on the Nintendo 64. That version, while featuring some technical improvements, relied on heavy compression for its assets, resulting in a generally inferior but still functional experience. Similarly, Elden Ring on Switch 2 delivers the core gameplay loop but with "asterisks" for those accustomed to higher fidelity.
This iteration is a significant improvement over past challenging Switch ports, like The Outer Worlds, which suffered from significant visual degradation and inconsistent frame rates. For players whose only option is the Switch 2, the port is a viable entry point into what many consider a masterpiece. However, for those who have already invested hundreds of hours on platforms like Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, or PC, the differences in frame rate and visual clarity will be immediately apparent, making it a less ideal way to revisit The Lands Between.
