Developer The Coalition has devised an innovative solution to overcome the Xbox Series S' limited memory pool for Gears of War: E-Day. As a first-party Xbox title, the game is tasked with performing well across Microsoft's current-generation consoles, a feat that presents unique challenges for the less powerful Series S. The studio's approach involves leveraging the console's ultra-fast NVMe SSD storage to supplement its onboard RAM.
Gears of War: E-Day features densely detailed environments that demand significant system memory. The Series S is equipped with 10GB of GDDR6 RAM, which can be a bottleneck for graphically intensive titles. The Coalition's technique, developed in collaboration with Xbox's Advanced Technology Group, allows the game to offload certain data onto the NVMe SSD. This effectively creates a secondary tier of memory, enabling smoother asset streaming.
Digital Foundry reported that while NVMe drives are not as fast as dedicated RAM, they are sufficiently quick to act as an extension. The system intelligently swaps assets between the SSD and RAM, prioritizing currently needed data in RAM and moving idle data back to the SSD. This process allows the game to gain approximately one gigabyte of usable system memory by utilizing a couple of gigabytes of SSD storage.
Advanced heuristics are employed to determine which data is moved. The system analyzes access patterns, ensuring frequently used data remains in RAM while less active data is transferred to the SSD. This method is crucial for maintaining performance without significant degradation, as it strategically manages data flow.
The implications of this technology extend beyond Gears of War: E-Day. As upcoming titles like Grand Theft Auto 6 and Fable are expected to be expansive and demanding, similar memory-management techniques could become essential for optimizing performance on the Xbox Series S. This development arrives at a time when console generations may be extended due to ongoing memory shortages, making clever engineering solutions increasingly important.
In addition to memory management, The Coalition also enhanced the game's engine with upgrades to its gore and dismemberment technology. This was a deliberate choice, as the developers felt player desensitization to the series' established violence warranted a renewed focus on visceral feedback.
The technical advancements come amidst broader organizational changes within Microsoft's gaming division. Reports indicate that staff at The Coalition are concerned about potential layoffs following the release of Gears of War: E-Day.
