GOG appears to be actively developing a native Linux version of its GOG Galaxy client, according to reports from GamingOnLinux. This move comes in response to persistent requests from the GOG user community for expanded platform support.
Krzysztof Papliński, joint-CEO of GOG, stated that Linux is a frequent topic of discussion among the community. He confirmed that the company has brought on a specialist to explore the best approach for implementing Linux support in GOG Galaxy. While specific timelines or release plans are not yet available, Papliński indicated that GOG is investing time and effort into this development, calling Linux the "next major frontier" for the platform.
Currently, Linux users can access GOG games through third-party launchers like Heroic Games Launcher. Heroic offers features similar to GOG Galaxy, including playtime and achievement tracking, support for non-GOG games, and integration with multiple storefronts. It also centralizes friends lists across Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store.
GOG Galaxy offers additional features such as integrated playtime and achievement tracking, alongside the ability to discover games through its storefront and manage friends lists across different platforms. The development of a native Linux client aims to bring these integrated features to Linux users directly.
Alongside the progress on Linux support, GOG is also exploring the use of AI-assisted development tools to enhance team efficiency and code quality. Further details on both the Linux client development and the integration of AI tools are expected to be shared by GOG at a later date.
