Recent technical analysis from Digital Foundry has shed light on the performance of Halo: Campaign Evolved across multiple current-generation consoles. The findings indicate that while the game runs capably on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5, the latter console generally provides a superior experience, particularly in avoiding cutscene stuttering.
The Xbox Series S reportedly exhibits visual characteristics similar to the Xbox Series X due to Unreal Engine 5 and Lumen Reflections, but maintains an internal resolution around 720p with consistent performance. On the Xbox Series X, graphical fidelity differences between its 60fps performance mode and 30fps quality mode are minimal. The performance mode does introduce some compromises in foliage and shadows, resulting in a softer image quality, with internal resolutions measured at 1224p for performance and 1440p for quality mode.
The PlayStation 5 version of Halo: Campaign Evolved is noted to be almost identical to the Xbox Series X in terms of image quality and presentation across both performance and quality modes. However, a key distinction is the absence of the cutscene stuttering that affects both the Xbox Series X and Series S. This lack of stuttering on the PS5 contributes to a more cohesive overall experience.
For players seeking the absolute best performance, the PS5 Pro delivers. Digital Foundry reports that its Pro-specific upscaling technology, PSSR, results in a noticeably sharper and cleaner image, mitigating some of the anti-aliasing artifacts present on other platforms. The PS5 Pro also offers smoother frame rates and improved image quality compared to the standard PS5.
Despite these advantages for PlayStation owners, an isolated bug affecting the assault rifle's fire rate and accuracy has been observed to make the weapon perform worse on the PlayStation than on other platforms. Nevertheless, the general consensus from the analysis points to the PlayStation 5, and especially the PS5 Pro, as offering the most polished Halo: Campaign Evolved experience.
