PlayStation Boss Hints at Future of Hybrid Gaming and Potential PS6 Handheld

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino has offered insights into the future direction of PlayStation hardware, suggesting a move towards more hybrid, adaptable gaming experiences that cater to modern, on-the-go playstyles. In an interview with Famitsu, Nishino reaffirmed Sony's commitment to dedicated game consoles, stating, "My belief that a console is necessary for playing games hasn’t changed," and that the company "wants to continue providing its own game consoles."

Nishino emphasized that "pick up and play" is the most crucial quality for consoles today. He indicated that future console experiences will involve "leveraging technologies that can be used in various forms and locations" to create engaging new possibilities. As an example, he pointed to Sony's efforts to allow comfortable play in diverse environments, citing the development of monitors and speakers, and the recently released PlayStation Portal as part of this initiative.

The PlayStation Portal, launched in November 2025, features cloud streaming capabilities, a feature Nishino highlighted as significant. This allows players to stream games directly from their PS5 or bypass the console entirely through cloud streaming, which has seen a notable increase in user adoption. Nishino reported that user numbers in January 2026 were 1.5 times that of December 2025, indicating growing comfort with the technology.

Sony has a history of exploring portable PlayStation devices, including the PSone's portable screen, the Japan-only Pocketstation, the PSP, PS Vita, PlayStation VR, and now the PlayStation Portal. Nishino stated that the development of the Portal was an experiment to create a new kind of gameplay experience, and that Sony intends to continue exploring various ideas for future products.

Beyond hardware, Nishino also touched upon Sony's evolving strategy for PC releases. The company has shifted its primary focus for first-party single-player titles to PS5 exclusivity, while live service games are likely to launch on both PS5 and PC to expand their player base. Sony will continue to make platform release decisions on a per-game basis, opting for PC releases when it enhances the overall gaming experience.

Speculation about the next-generation console, the PS6, has been ongoing, with rumors circulating about a dockable, Switch-like design or even a console with a separate handheld component. Industry sources suggest that rising component costs could push next-generation consoles, including the PS6, to exceed $1,000, potentially leading Sony to delay its release. Previous reports have also mentioned unannounced PlayStation handhelds with dockable capabilities and backward compatibility, as well as a potential lower-cost variant, similar to the Xbox Series S.
