PC players can now utilize the full suite of features offered by Sony's PlayStation DualSense controller wirelessly, a capability previously limited to wired connections. This functionality is made possible through a significant update to DSX, a third-party application designed to enhance DualSense compatibility on PC.
The DualSense controller, known for its advanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, has been a key innovation for the PlayStation 5. While it has functioned on PC, Sony officially supported its advanced features only when connected via USB cable. Community efforts and third-party developers have worked for years to bridge this gap, allowing for wireless use of all controller functionalities on PC.
DSX has historically provided users with greater control over the DualSense, including custom profile creation, detailed adjustments for the controller's various components, and access to its LED lighting. The latest update, version 3.2 which is currently in beta, introduces functional haptic feedback and Bluetooth audio support when the controller is connected wirelessly. This is achieved by the app creating a "Virtual DualSense" that can receive native DualSense signals from compatible games.
This enhanced wireless functionality is not free. Access to the DSX app on Steam and its associated DSX+ DLC is required. The base DSX application costs approximately $8, with the DLC adding an additional $4. A discounted bundle option is also available.
To use these features, DSX must be running in the background. While the latest update allows for manual launching of the app outside of Steam, a Steam login is periodically required to refresh a 28-day usage period. This solution, while somewhat complex and involving a purchase, allows PC users to experience the full capabilities of the DualSense controller wirelessly, replicating the experience available on PS5 without the need for a physical cable.
