Sony is revisiting a popular design trend from the late 1990s and early 2000s with the upcoming Prism Collection for the PlayStation 5. This new line introduces console covers and DualSense controllers with transparent elements, allowing a glimpse of the hardware within.
The Prism Collection will be available in three distinct glossy colorways: Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. Preorders are scheduled to open on November 10 through the PlayStation Direct store, with a release date set for February 4, 2027.
According to Sony, the design was inspired by the PS5 design team's desire to incorporate a transparent aesthetic into the console and its accessories. The goal was to showcase the internal components while maintaining a sleek appearance. Flare Orange is described as having a "bold and vibrant aesthetic," Emerald Green offers an "elegant" finish, and Graphite Gray is intended to give the PS5 a "refined" look.
Leo Cardoso and Satoshi Aoyagi from Sony's Color, Material, and Finish design team stated that the company recognized the demand from fans for the return of transparent controllers. They aimed to modernize the iconic see-through trend of the late '90s to complement the PS5's existing industrial design. The controllers feature a high-gloss clear finish on the back, revealing the technology inside while retaining a monochromatic overall look. A metallic finish on the middle cover is intended to add a premium contrast.
The Prism Collection DualSense controllers will retail for an MSRP of $85 each, and the PS5 console covers will be priced at $75 each.
This release follows other recent limited-edition accessories, including the Marathon and Gran Turismo DualSense controllers, as well as a console cover and matching DualSense controller for fans of Marvel's Wolverine, available in yellow or silver with claw mark designs.
