SteelSeries has launched the Aeon Pro, a new high-end controller that integrates an innovative "infinite battery" system, previously seen in the company's Arctis Nova Pro gaming headsets. This system utilizes two rechargeable batteries, one in the controller and a spare charging in a base station, allowing for near-instantaneous battery swaps to maintain uninterrupted gameplay.
This "infinite" battery solution aims to eliminate charging downtime. When one battery depletes, users can quickly swap it with the fully charged spare from the base station in under ten seconds. The base station itself also serves as a convenient dock for the controller when not in use, providing a dedicated place on a desk or entertainment center.
Beyond its battery technology, the Aeon Pro is equipped with a range of advanced features. It includes Hall-effect thumbsticks and buttons with tactile switch connections for enhanced durability and responsiveness. The controller also features two-stage Hall-effect sensors in its triggers and four customizable paddles on the rear for additional inputs. Many of these components, including buttons, bumpers, paddles, the D-pad, and triggers in their short-throw setting, provide a satisfying audible click.
A small OLED display situated above the Xbox button offers at-a-glance information on battery life and facilitates system switching or button remapping. While not as extensively featured as some other high-end controller interfaces, it effectively removes guesswork regarding active profiles and custom configurations.
The controller supports seamless switching between PC and Xbox via separate USB-C connections on the dock, along with a third Bluetooth option. However, it does not offer compatibility with PlayStation or Nintendo Switch consoles. The dock's reliance on wired connections means it functions best when the PC and Xbox are located near each other; a simpler dongle might be more convenient for users with separated gaming setups.
In testing, the Aeon Pro has proven to be an effective peripheral, praised for its comfortable feel and reliable performance during gameplay. For instance, it performed admirably during sessions of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, facilitating precise control for combat maneuvers.
Despite its array of advanced features and the innovative battery system, the SteelSeries Aeon Pro comes with a significant price tag of $260, positioning it at the higher end of the pro controller market. SteelSeries is continuing to test the controller, with final judgment pending further evaluation of its performance and value proposition.
