However, obtaining one will be challenging, as the company plans to send out emails to a select group of individuals who pre-registered, while others will be placed on a waiting list. The allocation process is described as random and potentially restrictive.
To be eligible for a chance to buy a Steam Machine, interested parties must register through their Steam account before February 25 at 10 a.m. PST. During registration, users can select their preferred Steam Machine bundle. The available options include the Steam Machine 512GB for $1,049 USD, a bundle with a Steam Controller for $1,128 USD, the Steam Machine 2TB for $1,349 USD, and a 2TB bundle with a Steam Controller and two faceplates for $1,428 USD.
Following registration, users will receive a confirmation email from Valve. This initial email does not guarantee a purchase opportunity but confirms the user's place on the list. Participants can adjust their bundle selection or remove themselves from the list until the registration deadline.
On June 25, Valve will finalize the registration list and conduct a randomized selection. Emails granting purchase access will be sent to selected individuals, with others added to a waiting list. Missing the June 25 cutoff for initial purchase offers means automatically being placed on the waiting list for future opportunities.
Valve has indicated that production numbers for the Steam Machine are likely limited due to ongoing RAM shortages affecting the tech industry. Coupled with the device's premium pricing and significant consumer interest, the combination of random selection, a one-per-household limit, and the email-based distribution system suggests that the odds of securing a unit in the initial rollout are slim.
Furthermore, eligibility for purchasing a Steam Machine requires the user's Steam account to be in good standing and to have made at least one purchase on Steam prior to April 27. Failure to meet these criteria will result in disqualification from the purchase process.
