Valve's Steam Machine Launches June 30th with a Price Tag Over $1,000, Positioned as a PC Extension

Valve has announced that its Steam Machine will launch on June 30th, with pricing starting at a surprising $1,049 for the base 512GB model. The device can scale up to $1,428 for a 2TB configuration, complete with a Steam Controller and swappable faceplates. In an accompanying FAQ, Valve emphasized that the Steam Machine should be viewed as an extension of PC gaming rather than a console.

"We think of Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming, not as a console," the company stated. Valve differentiated its offering from traditional consoles like those from Microsoft and Sony, suggesting that consoles are often sold at a loss with profits recouped through software and services. They also highlighted that console games can be locked to specific hardware, a limitation they aim to avoid with the Steam Machine's open ecosystem.

Valve attributed the higher-than-anticipated price to what they termed the "RAM-aggedon," a surge in component and memory costs fueled by the demand from AI development. This trend has also led to price increases for existing consoles, with reports indicating price hikes for the Xbox and PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch 2 also expected to see a price increase in September.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously commented on the escalating cost of gaming consoles, noting that they have become prohibitively expensive for mass audiences and that radically different business models may be necessary. She specifically stated that asking consumers to pay thousands of dollars for new consoles is unsustainable.

Early impressions suggest that the Steam Machine functions as a user-friendly, adequately powered gaming PC, though it may not match the performance of a custom-built PC at the same price point. The pre-order process will also incorporate a queue system, a measure implemented in response to issues encountered with the Steam Controller.
