World of Warcraft: Forever Will Feature Full Controller Support

Blizzard's upcoming World of Warcraft evolution, WoW: Forever, will offer full controller support at launch, a significant first for the long-running MMORPG. A hands-on demonstration at BlizzCon 2026 showcased the feature in an alpha state, which performed beyond expectations. While Blizzard has introduced rudimentary controller support in recent years, a completely mouse-and-keyboard-free experience has previously relied on third-party add-ons like ConsolePort.

The controller implementation in WoW: Forever allows for natural gameplay, according to initial impressions. Shoulder buttons are used to cycle through NPCs, face buttons handle interaction and jumping, and abilities are mapped to the d-pad and face buttons. Additional keybinds are accessible through triggers, with each trigger offering eight additional bindings, and holding both triggers simultaneously providing another eight, totaling 28 accessible buttons. This extensive mapping could prove beneficial, especially for classes with numerous skills and spell ranks.

However, the controller support may present challenges in certain aspects of gameplay. Managing inventory, for instance, was observed to be less intuitive on a controller compared to the quick access of a mouse and keyboard. Navigating through numerous items in bags via a radial menu and cycling through options was noted as a slower process. This suggests that the effectiveness of the controller scheme might vary depending on the class played and the specific gameplay scenario.

While Blizzard has announced that WoW: Forever will be fully playable with a controller upon its November 4 launch, details regarding potential controller support for the modern "retail" version of World of Warcraft remain unclear. Given the shared development DNA between different WoW versions, it is speculated that the feature may eventually extend to the retail game. GameSpot has reached out to Blizzard for comment on these plans.

The implementation of robust controller support also raises questions about a potential console version of World of Warcraft. With Blizzard's ownership by Microsoft, the parent company of Xbox, speculation has persisted that a console release might be in the works. This is further fueled by changes in the game, such as add-on restrictions and ability pruning, which some fans interpret as preparations for a console launch. While Blizzard has previously stated it would announce any console plans, the increasing popularity of handheld PCs further highlights the accessibility benefits of such a feature. Regardless of whether a console version materializes, the addition of full controller support is viewed as a long-overdue improvement for accessibility on PC.
