Xbox's disc-to-digital feature has officially launched for all owners of Xbox consoles, enabling the conversion of most physical game discs into digital licenses. This feature, which underwent approximately a month of testing, applies to both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games.
According to Xbox's official support page, the disc-to-digital functionality is compatible with a wide range of physical games across the two console generations. However, not all titles are eligible, and eligibility may shift over time due to factors such as technical, licensing, publishing, and manufacturing considerations.
The process involves inserting a compatible game disc into the console. Users are then presented with an option to convert the game into a digital copy. Once converted, the game becomes permanently linked to the user's account, eliminating the need to insert the physical disc for authentication each time they wish to play.
This digital license transfers with the disc itself. This means the original owner can subsequently sell or transfer ownership of their physical copy. The new owner can then utilize the same disc-to-digital process to acquire their own digital license, thereby revoking the original owner's access. This system theoretically offers benefits of both physical and digital ownership models.
Games that support Xbox Play Anywhere will also become available for download and play on PC via the Xbox app after conversion. Players can identify eligible titles by filtering their game library for Play Anywhere support and looking for the disc-to-digital badge.
The release version of the feature includes an added option to disable the automatic installation process when discs are inserted. This is particularly useful for users converting multiple discs consecutively, as it allows the console to recognize the disc for digitization without initiating a game installation.
