Alienware 34 AW3426DW Review: QD-OLED Gaming Gets Brighter and Faster

Alienware has released its latest iteration of the 34-inch ultrawide OLED gaming monitor, the AW3426DW, building upon the foundation laid by its predecessor. This new model incorporates Samsung's latest QD-OLED panel technology, dubbed Penta Tandem, bringing notable upgrades in brightness, refresh rate, and resistance to burn-in.

The headline specifications for the AW3426DW include a full-screen brightness of 300 nits and a peak HDR brightness of 1,300 nits, an increase from the 250 nits and 1,000 nits of the original model. It also boasts VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. The refresh rate has been boosted from 175Hz to 280Hz, with an interim model, the AW3425DW, having already pushed this to 240Hz.

Samsung's Penta Tandem QD-OLED panel offers several key improvements beyond raw brightness. It is designed to be more resistant to burn-in, and Alienware backs this with a three-year warranty that includes burn-in coverage. Furthermore, the panel now features an RGB-stripe subpixel structure, which resolves previous issues with font smoothing technologies like Microsoft's ClearType, particularly noticeable on lower-resolution ultrawide displays. The monitor's pixel density stands at 110 DPI.

Users may also notice a reduction in the characteristic purple tint that QD-OLEDs can exhibit in bright ambient light. While not entirely eliminated, this improvement enhances contrast and black levels in such conditions. The glossy panel surface has also been made more durable and scratch-resistant, addressing a common complaint with earlier QD-OLED models.

The design of the AW3426DW retains Alienware's AW30 aesthetic with rounded forms and dark plastics. Connectivity includes two HDMI 2.1 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4, along with a USB hub. However, it lacks a primary USB-C input, meaning no single-cable laptop connectivity or KVM switch functionality, features found on competing monitors like the MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36.

Image quality is a strong point for the AW3426DW. The increased brightness provides more 'pop' in visuals, and the reduced purple tint contributes to better color balance, although the panel still tends to run slightly warm. In HDR content, the monitor delivers a vibrant and contrasty experience, particularly in scenes with mixed bright and dark elements, significantly outperforming LCD displays. It supports multiple HDR modes, including VESA True Black 500, Peak 1300, and a Peak 1300 Bright mode intended for all-content use, though its SDR calibration is noted as slightly off.

Dolby Vision support is also included, offering an additional HDR standard primarily beneficial for video content. The panel exhibits good uniformity with no significant banding or dirty screen effect. The response time is exceptionally fast at 0.03ms, providing excellent motion clarity in games.

Alienware has included an "Esports Mode" that shrinks the display to a 25-inch 16:9 aspect ratio to emulate smaller esports monitors. However, the review suggests that dedicated esports players are unlikely to opt for an ultrawide, and more affordable, higher refresh rate options exist.

A trade-off inherent to this class of monitor is its 110 DPI pixel density, which does not produce the sharpest text or image detail compared to higher-resolution panels. A 32-inch 4K monitor might offer a better compromise for mixed gaming and general computing use due to its superior sharpness, though it comes with higher GPU demands and lacks the immersive ultrawide aspect ratio.

Overall, the Alienware 34 AW3426DW is a compelling implementation of Samsung's new QD-OLED technology, offering a superior visual experience for gaming. While it is priced competitively at $799, some may prefer to pay an additional $100 for the MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 for its higher 360Hz refresh rate and USB-C/KVM features. However, if 280Hz is sufficient and USB-C is not a priority, the AW3426DW presents a strong value proposition, easily ranking as one of the most impressive gaming monitors available.
