Boulies EP200 Review: A Budget Gaming Chair That Mostly Delivers

A good chair is a crucial investment for PC gamers prioritizing ergonomics, but the market is flooded with visually similar, often questionable budget options. The Boulies EP200 enters this space aiming to offer a Herman Miller-esque aesthetic at a significantly lower price point, typically available on sale for around $209 USD. For a gaming chair in this price bracket, the EP200 presents a compelling case, though it's not without its compromises.

The chair arrives in understated cardboard packaging, and assembly follows a standard process. The result is an office-chic design with a light grey mesh back and fabric seat, suitable for any workspace, even if its gaming-oriented roots are subtly present. The unit reviewed had a minor perforation in the back mesh, which thankfully has not worsened, suggesting a degree of durability, though its initial presence is a point of concern.

Adjustability on the EP200 is a mixed bag. While the lower cushion can be moved forward, backward, up, and down, it lacks a tilt function. The backrest reclines, but not to its full extent. The headrest offers angle adjustments, and the armrests can be raised, but they do not pivot. An adjustable lumbar support is present, but its fixed vertical position means it will only be effective if it aligns perfectly with the user's lower back.

While the chair provides adequate comfort for an average-sized individual, a taller user found it difficult to achieve complete comfort. The static headrest and lumbar support did not accommodate their height well, even after adjusting the seat pad. The raisable armrests were a universally appreciated feature, but the lack of pivoting remains a drawback. The limited, single-axis movement for most adjustments means the chair might not cater to everyone's specific ergonomic needs.

The chair's basic settings do offer a decent level of comfort. The seat padding is notably thick, providing ample cushioning that prevents discomfort in the sit bones and legs during extended use. The ability to slide the seat forward also allows for varied sitting positions, such as tucking one leg up. This generous padding makes long gaming sessions viable, and the chair has proven comfortable enough for streaming with a green screen setup.

Ultimately, the Boulies EP200 stands out as a comfortable option within its price range for users of average build. However, individuals with specific ergonomic requirements or those outside the average height and size spectrum may find its limited adjustability challenging. For those with a budget around $200 USD, the EP200 is a strong contender, especially if willing to slightly exceed the budget for its features and comfort.
