Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's campaign successfully concludes a seven-year narrative arc, delivering a series of engaging missions that prioritize new developments over lingering plot threads. This installment stands as a significant improvement over its predecessor, Modern Warfare 3, offering a cohesive single-player experience that recalls the series' strengths.

The campaign is structured into two distinct halves, focusing on Captain Price and the unfolding North Korean invasion of South Korea. Infinity Ward has opted to streamline Price's storyline, excising extraneous characters and resolving convoluted plot points to provide a sense of closure. Price's narrative unfolds over five days leading up to the invasion, with his focus primarily on Makarov and his superiors. While Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal of the antagonist, The Archer, is unsettling, the character suffers from limited screen time.

Price's missions often adopt a Bond-esque style, featuring parkour escapes, car chases, and stealth infiltration. However, these segments, while enjoyable, ultimately feel like the weaker half of the campaign compared to the more compelling Korean conflict storyline.

The 16 missions span various global locations and timelines, alternating between the "present day" of the Korean war and Price's investigation in the preceding week. This structure allows for a dynamic blend of traditional military operations and covert missions. For instance, one mission sees Price engaging in close-quarters combat within a New York nightclub, while the next places the player in a mortar-wielding defense of Seoul.

The Korean campaign segments introduce compelling new characters, notably Park Hyun Jun, portrayed by Young Mazino. Park and his squad, composed of Korean and US soldiers, provide an emotional anchor to the story, balancing levity with the seriousness of their situation. Their developing bonds make their plight genuinely engaging, offering a nuanced portrayal of the North Korean threat that avoids simple villainization.

A standout mission, "Stranded," offers significant player freedom. This expansive mission integrates elements of Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode, tasking players with rebuilding their arsenal by raiding outposts and completing objectives across a large, snowy map. The mission encourages exploration and strategic resource management, seamlessly weaving its gameplay mechanics into the overarching narrative.

Other notable missions include a harrowing beach landing sequence that showcases the game's impressive sound design and an airfield escape where players can dynamically switch characters. These large-scale operations, filled with numerous moving parts, highlight the campaign's blockbuster ambitions. While the quality of individual missions is consistently high, the campaign lacks a truly iconic, all-time standout mission on par with those from earlier Call of Duty installments.

The campaign's progression is mostly smooth, with occasional stumbles in unforgiving stealth sections or its imprecise melee combat system. These moments can detract from key story beats. However, the core gunplay remains refined, with slick movement and satisfying weapon feedback characteristic of Infinity Ward's work. Enemy AI, while not groundbreaking, still demands tactical play, with careful management of ammo, armor, and cover being essential, especially in later missions. Some heavily armored enemies present a notable challenge in tight environments.

Overall, Modern Warfare 4's campaign rekindles enthusiasm for the series. It successfully balances a large cast, bids farewell to some characters while fostering connections with new ones, and delivers satisfying blockbuster action. The "Stranded" mission, in particular, stands out for its innovative approach. While it may not reach the absolute pinnacle of Call of Duty campaigns, it provides a strong and fitting conclusion to the Modern Warfare saga.
