Creative XF1 Speaker Review: Mighty Sound in a Compact Package

The Creative XF1 speakers aim to strike a balance between compact size and powerful audio, a goal they largely achieve with a robust feature set and strong sound reproduction for their price point. These speakers, priced at $180 (£140), are designed for users prioritizing desk space without sacrificing significant audio quality.

Design and Connectivity

The XF1 speakers are notably compact, measuring just over 6 inches tall, making them an excellent choice for smaller desks. Their understated black design fits easily into most setups without drawing undue attention. Accompanying the speakers are two cork stands, which can be used to angle the speakers upward by 15 degrees. While not essential, their inclusion for free is a thoughtful addition that can improve sound direction towards the listener.

Connectivity is a strong suit for the XF1, offering Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC support, USB Type-C, and an auxiliary input. A single button on the right speaker controls both volume via a dial and input switching via a click, allowing for seamless transitions between devices like a PC and a phone. This functionality is described as a simpler, more affordable alternative to features found in more expensive hardware.

Audio Performance

For their size and price, the XF1 speakers deliver striking clarity, with bass, mids, and treble clearly distinguishable. They perform well at low volumes, a common challenge for many speakers, and can also achieve significant loudness, outputting 72 watts RMS. While not reaching audiophile-grade quality, they offer a level of sound reproduction that Creative has skillfully balanced for their compact dimensions. The inclusion of smart EQ modes through Creative's software further enhances their versatility, with presets for gaming, music, and movies, alongside game-specific EQs for titles like Grand Theft Auto and The Last of Us. Even at the default setting, the XF1 provides a compelling audio experience suitable for games, music, and movies.
