Dead or Alive 6: Last Round Review - A Familiar Fight Returns

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round arrives as a comprehensive re-release, bundling all previous DLC into a single package. While it introduces little in the way of new content beyond a photo mode, it serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers and a complete offering for long-time fans. The core of the experience remains the series' signature combat, built around the intricate Triangle System.

This system dictates a rock-paper-scissors dynamic where strikes beat throws, throws beat holds, and holds beat strikes. At its best, Dead or Alive combat evolves into a strategic chess match, requiring players to anticipate and counter their opponent's moves. Holds, in particular, are a defining mechanic, allowing players to parry incoming strikes by inputting the correct defensive stance. Landing a well-timed hold can completely turn the tide of a round, offering a deeply satisfying payoff.

Despite its depth, Dead or Alive 6 remains accessible. While mastering the system requires a deep understanding of character matchups and intricate move sets, the basic controls—punch, kick, throw, and hold—are intuitive. The addition of a special attack button for auto-combos and meter-based special moves, introduced in the original 2019 release, further streamlines the experience. The Break Gauge adds another layer, enabling powerful Break Blows and Break Holds that can dramatically shift momentum, a system that has largely stood the test of time.

Last Round includes all previously released DLC characters, such as Momiji and Rachel from the Ninja Gaiden series. These additions integrate seamlessly, offering distinct playstyles. Momiji, for instance, prioritizes speed and aggression, while Rachel relies on brute force and quick attack strings. The game also features a disjointed but entertaining story mode, which, despite its convoluted plot involving tournaments, conspiracies, and cybernetic ninjas, provides endearing character interactions and a surprisingly strong focus on its female cast. These characters are given agency and drive the narrative, a refreshing change from typical fighting game story modes.

While the series is often criticized for its character designs and revealing costumes, Last Round offers a vast array of cosmetic options, including all DLC outfits. The visual presentation, which includes realistic character details like sweat and visible injuries, holds up well. These elements, dismissed by some at the original release, add a layer of grounded brutality to the combat that aligns with the physicality of fighting. Compared to some more overtly sexualized character designs in other modern fighting games, Dead or Alive 6's aesthetic can feel comparatively restrained.

Despite its strengths, Last Round is not without its concerns. The absence of rollback netcode, a staple in modern competitive fighting games, is a notable omission that could impact online play. Additionally, some promised DLC characters were not immediately available at the time of review, suggesting potential issues with unlock codes. Further testing on live servers and exploration of modes like DOA Quest are needed to fully evaluate the package. Nevertheless, the fundamental combat of Dead or Alive 6: Last Round remains as engaging and satisfying as ever.
