Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen DLC Rekindles the Flames of Adventure

When first booting up Dragon's Dogma 2 again for its Dark Arisen DLC, there was a sense of mild trepidation. Having already conquered the base game, the prospect of more of the same, albeit in a snowy setting, didn't initially spark great excitement. However, venturing into the new region of Norgan quickly dispelled these doubts, reminding the player of Dragon's Dogma 2's unique blend of weirdness, challenge, and occasional silliness.

Norgan, situated north of the existing map, presents a harsh, snowy tundra dotted with ruins and a single settlement. Players are sent here to investigate rumors of a second Arisen and a prophetic dream. The region is fraught with peril, from familiar monsters like goblins and griffins to new threats such as fast-moving zombies. Despite the desolate appearance, Norgan offers a surprising depth of content, with a main story that continuously unfolds and numerous sidequests that encourage thorough exploration.

While the DLC introduces 12 new dungeons, they are presented as combat trials scaled for players who have already completed the base game. For those in New Game+ at higher levels, these dungeons may feel relatively inconsequential, with rewards that are often redundant. However, for first-time players, these dungeons are expected to integrate seamlessly into the overall adventure.

The game's approach to traversal and fast travel, a point of contention for some in the base game, is recontextualized in Norgan. The base game's generous fast travel options were seen by some as trivializing the original pacing. In contrast, Norgan's layout, with its sparse settlements and distant objectives, makes the limited fast travel and infrequent campsites a more deliberate challenge. This design choice encourages a more strategic approach, turning the journey into a climb rather than a simple road trip. The gameplay loop often involves arduous treks to rare rest spots with portcrystals, returning to town for preparation and artifact appraisal, and then embarking on another long journey further into the region.

Concerns about monster variety in Dark Arisen are partially valid, as many encounters feature variations of existing enemies. However, these familiar foes are often presented with new twists. For instance, enemies may utilize environmental hazards like icicles, or players can strategically use rolling snowballs. Blizzards and whiteouts add an element of survival, obscuring visibility and impacting stamina. While most are familiar, some new monster variants, like a griffin with lightning attacks, offer fresh challenges. The DLC also introduces a few entirely new boss encounters that incorporate unique mechanics, drawing inspiration from Capcom's Monster Hunter series.

Dark Arisen does not fundamentally alter Dragon's Dogma 2's core mechanics but instead expands upon them naturally. The new campaign is challenging in its own right and feels like a cohesive part of the original game's world and lore, even introducing new plot points with implications for the wider Dragon's Dogma universe. The expansion successfully reignites enthusiasm for the series, demonstrating that the franchise remains in capable hands.

The game is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The release date for Dark Arisen is October 9, 2026.
