Endless Legend 2 is a magnificent example of why Amplitude is so loved by 4X fans, cementing the studio's legacy with trademark creativity and standout visual design in a modernized package. The game offers a rule-breaking sci-fantasy experience that stands out in a genre often filled with familiar tropes.
Sciences Fantastical
The game returns to the science fantasy setting that defined its predecessor, blending sword and sorcery with technological elements. Instead of traditional fantasy races, players encounter evolved desert lizards, coral robots, and sand spirit genies. The world of Saiadha, much like its predecessor's Auriga, is a dying planet. Ancient secrets sealed beneath its surface are resurfacing, causing the oceans to drain and revealing sunken landscapes and forgotten technologies ripe for exploitation. This dynamic environmental shift, particularly the recurring monsoon and subsequent Tidefall events, creates a perfect backdrop for a 4X game focused on expansion and discovery.
Every few dozen turns, monsoons engulf the world in storms, followed by Tidefall, which recedes shorelines to expose new areas. This mechanic ensures that the game's map is constantly evolving, presenting fresh opportunities for colonization and resource gathering.
Aesthetics Fantastical
Endless Legend 2 continues the series' tradition of exceptional visual design. The painterly art style employs distinct color choices across terrains and units, making different biomes and newly revealed areas visually unique. Textures effectively convey different ground types, from earth and sand to stone and vast living circuitry. While the lighting can sometimes feel flat, it avoids muddying the visual environment, which is preferable to overly complex effects. The soundtrack by Arnaud Roy is a particular highlight, dynamically adapting to in-game events and screen focus, using an ethereal crystal organ that avoids repetitive loops.
Despite the strong visual presentation, the user interface, while improved, can sometimes be less intuitive than in the first game. The use of symbols on the map for cities and armies, rather than clear text labels, can require players to learn them individually, creating minor friction when quickly assessing the game state.
Play Fantastical
While some of Endless Legend 2's signature innovations from the first game have become more common in the genre, its core systems remain exceptionally strong. The FIDSI (Food, Industry, Dust, Science, and Influence) resource system for city management is straightforward and effective. The game truly shines in how it encourages each faction to break the rules of the genre in unique ways, offering distinct playstyles that deviate from Endless Legend or Endless Space.
The receding oceans of Saiadha play a crucial role in the 4X loop, continually refreshing the game's pacing. The genre typically excels during the initial exploration and expansion phases and the mid-game resource contention. Endless Legend 2 masterfully replicates these exciting phases multiple times throughout a single playthrough. Tidefall events can connect previously isolated territories, reveal valuable resources, and introduce new challenges, ensuring that the game rarely stagnates.
Tactics Fantastical
The dynamic map constantly encourages army movement, whether for scouting, gathering curiosities, or engaging with minor factions. Armies are essential for guarding borders against aggressors or the seasonal Doomwraiths, and for positioning to exploit newly revealed territories after Tidefall. This integration of military units into the exploration and questing loops contributes to the game's sense of wonder.
Tactical combat, while visually integrated with the game map, is less deep than it could be. Fights often involve near-equal exchanges unless significantly outnumbered, and gaining an advantage frequently relies on stacking buffs or exploiting terrain mechanics. However, the game's default difficulty settings are remarkably well-tuned, providing a consistent challenge that escalates logically. The highest difficulties are punishing, sometimes leading to unwinnable starts, which Paradoxically signifies a successful implementation of challenge. It is worth noting that higher AI difficulty often comes from inflated bonuses rather than improved strategic play.
Weirdos Fantastical
The factions are a defining feature of Endless Legend 2, offering a high degree of asymmetry. Each faction fundamentally alters or ignores core game mechanics. For example, the Children of Sheredyn prioritize fortresses over public amenities, while the Sandshapers, mineral constructs, cannot farm and must terraform deserts to gather resources. The Necrophage, singularly focused on consumption, are justified in constant warfare. The game also features factions like the Aspects, who can use influence to enforce treaties, and religious lizards wielding solar mirror lasers.
While perhaps less extreme than its predecessor, the factions offer wild and unconventional playstyles. This unique approach to faction design ensures a high degree of replayability and allows players to engage with the 4X genre in novel and exciting ways.
