Few games are more deserving of a remake than the original Gothic. Over 25 years ago, this RPG from a small German team redefined the genre’s possibilities with its scope, scale, and unparalleled freedom. Although largely unknown in the West, Gothic influenced a generation of European developers, with its DNA present in titles like The Witcher and Stalker. Alkimia Interactive has undertaken the task of rebuilding Gothic for a new audience and, more importantly, revitalizing it for existing fans. The result is a remake that balances dedication and innovation with only a few missteps.

The vast, dense penal colony of Khorinis has been beautifully rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, featuring both new content and restored cut content. Players are free to explore this world from the outset, with environments ranging from frosted peaks to winding rivers. The sense of discovery and self-sufficiency is a key element, allowing players to explore almost anywhere at any level without forced tutorials, map markers, or hard barriers beyond the magical one overhead. The forests, mines, and ruins are filled with dangerous creatures and valuable treasures, encouraging players to exploit opportunities or face death.

Achieving anything in Khorinis requires interaction with fellow prisoners. Obtaining essential items like a map necessitates bartering, or players can engage with a new lockpicking minigame. Alkimia Interactive has remained committed to the original game's challenging design philosophy, which should appeal to fans of titles like Dragon's Dogma and Elden Ring.

Combat and movement have been significantly revamped. The original's rigid, clumsy combat has been replaced with a faster, more accurate combo system. Movement is also far more fluid than the original's stiff, tank-like controls. While button mashing is still punished and leaves players vulnerable after attacks or dodges, the system allows for satisfying weaves of attacks and dashes once mastered. Despite these improvements, the experience is frequently hampered by poor technical performance.

Players will contend with framerate drops, inconsistent hitboxes, and occasional teleporting enemies. Pervasive technical issues and performance problems are the remake's most significant drawbacks. Even on modest settings, the framerate struggles to remain stable, and players may encounter buggy animations and collision traps. However, these issues are not game-breaking and contribute to the game's characteristic janky charm, a trait the original Gothic helped define.

Despite the many games it has influenced, Gothic remains a unique experience. This remake is both faithful to its source material and refreshingly new, offering accessibility improvements while retaining its unforgiving nature and "eurojank" aesthetic. While newcomers might find aspects of the game dated, Gothic 1 Remake is a worthwhile endeavor for anyone interested in experiencing a seminal, yet underplayed, classic.
