MSI Versa 300 Wireless 8K Review

MSI, a brand perhaps better known for its components and laptops, has entered the gaming mouse arena with the Versa 300 Wireless 8K. This peripheral aims to compete with high-end options, boasting a 26,000 DPI sensor, an 8000 Hz wireless polling rate, and a lightweight 66g design.

On first impression, the Versa 300 Wireless 8K presents a utilitarian aesthetic with an all-black plastic chassis. While it lacks significant contouring for ergonomic comfort, the plastics used feel dense, and textured surfaces on the sides offer a secure grip. The mouse's light weight facilitates quick movements and wrist flicks without feeling cumbersome. Its button layout is straightforward, featuring two primary buttons, a DPI switch, and a scroll wheel on the top, complemented by navigation buttons on the side. The underside houses a switch for toggling between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless modes, and a convenient compartment for the included USB-A receiver.

The mouse features a single RGB lighting zone, an MSI logo at the rear, which is somewhat dim. Configuration for this lighting is handled by MSI's separate Portal X software, as the primary MSI Center software, used for remapping inputs and macros, does not control the RGB. This division of software functions, with Portal X being web-based, means some cross-platform usability but also a lack of unified control and feature parity. The MSI Center software itself offers limited customization, allowing only input remapping and macro assignment, alongside advanced features like angle snapping and debounce time adjustment for the Omron mechanical switches.

The internal Omron switches provide a firm and tactile click, though their travel distance is noted as longer compared to more common hybrid or optical switches found in competing gaming mice. This characteristic may appeal to some users, but could be a consideration for those prioritizing maximum speed and precision.

In terms of performance, the Versa 300 Wireless 8K is equipped with a PixArt PAW3395 sensor, capable of up to 26,000 DPI. This sensor proved responsive in testing, particularly in fast-paced games like Counter-Strike 2, where adjustable DPI settings (between 100 and 26,000) allowed for accurate aiming. Settings between 1600 and 3200 DPI were found to be comfortable for aiming in CS2 and general Windows navigation.

The 8000 Hz wireless polling rate is a notable feature, contributing to enhanced responsiveness and potentially reduced latency, which could be beneficial for competitive players. This higher polling rate means the mouse reports its position and inputs more frequently than devices with lower rates. Combined with the sensor, this results in a responsive feel in shooters with brisk, precise inputs and minimal discernible latency, making it a strong contender for FPS titles. The mechanical switches are rated for up to 60 million actuations, suggesting good durability.

Connectivity options include both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless. The 2.4 GHz connection supports the high polling rate, while Bluetooth offers broader versatility. The mouse maintained a stable and reliable connection across both methods during testing.

Battery life is rated at up to 196 hours via 2.4 GHz at a standard 1000 Hz polling rate. However, operating at the full 8000 Hz rate significantly reduces endurance, with testing indicating approximately 75 hours of use. This is still considered competitive compared to other mice that experience a more substantial drop-off in battery life at their maximum performance settings.

Pricing is a significant advantage for the Versa 300 Wireless 8K, retailing at $100/£60. This positions it as a more affordable option compared to competitors offering similar specifications. This value proposition makes it an attractive choice for those seeking a high-performance, lightweight mouse for FPS games without a prohibitive cost.

Despite its strong feature set and performance, the Versa 300 Wireless 8K may lack the overall polish and refined software experience offered by some rivals from brands like Endgame Gear or SteelSeries, which can command similar prices. While it excels in core functionality, it falls short of being a top-tier contender due to these considerations.
